Dramatic soprano Erika Mädi Jones debuted to critical acclaim as Elisabeth in Tannhäuser at Longborough Festival Opera in 2016, working with Anthony Negus. In 2017 she performed Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes at Dartington International Music Festival under the baton of Sian Edwards. Other operatic roles include Sieglinde in Die Walküre(Edinburgh Opera Players), Micaëla in Carmen (Rogue Opera), Donna Anna in Don Giovanni (Moon-Little Theatre and Co-Opera Co.), and Leonore in Fidelio (Guildford Opera). She was a chorister at Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 2015.
As a recitalist, Erika has performed at venues including Benjamin Britten’s Library at The Red House, Aldeburgh, St James’s Piccadilly and Blackheath Halls, and at festivals including the London Song Festival, Aldeburgh Festival and Three Choirs Festival. She has been featured in the BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Recital series and has appeared as a guest on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune. A committed recital artist, she performs a wide range of song repertoire, including works by Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Strauss, Wagner, Britten, Debussy and Duparc, as well as lesser-known composers such as Berg, Korngold, Poldowski, Alma Mahler, Frank Bridge and Rebecca Clarke.
On the concert platform, Erika has performed Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Ravel’s Shéhérazade, and has worked with conductors including Howard Williams, Diego Masson and Gerry Cornelius. Her oratorio repertoire includes the soprano solos in Elgar’s The Kingdom, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Verdi’s Requiem and Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem.
A Britten Pears Young Artist, Erika won the 2017 Dvořák Society for Czech and Slovak Music Prize at the Emmy Destinn Young Singers Competition and was highly commended in the finals of the 2015 Wagner Society Singing Competition. In 2018 she was a semi-finalist in the Internationale Wagnerstimmen Wettbewerb in Karlsruhe. She was also a Les Azuriales Young Artist in 2015.
Together with pianist Panaretos Kyriatzidis, Erika won the 2018 British Song Competition at the London Song Festival, awarded by Roger Vignoles in his masterclass. The duo have performed together since meeting at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, where they won first prize in the Elisabeth Schumann Lieder Duo Competition.
Erika graduated with honours from Cardiff University School of Music before undertaking vocal studies at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. She was awarded Distinction in both her Master of Music and Postgraduate Artist Diploma. Her studies were supported by the Robinson Hearn Scholarship, Stopford Westminster Bursary, Kathleen Roberts Scholarship, and Trinity Laban postgraduate and external bursary funds. While at Trinity Laban, she won second prize in the Roy Pleasance Competition and was a member of the 2013/14 Trinity Laban mentor scheme at English National Opera. She has performed in masterclasses with artists including Cheryl Studer, Susan Bullock, Rosalind Plowright OBE, Diana Montague and Ryland Davies.
Erika is grateful to have received support from Help Musicians UK, the Nicholas Boas Trust and the Wagner Society. She is a recipient of the Goodall Scholarship from the Wagner Society and the Friends in New York of TCM London Award / Edgar T. P. Comley Certificate of Excellence.
